As someone who travels this country a lot, and always orders the fried pickles, I can attest that they are more common than ever. I've had them, in the just the last month or so, in Portland OR, Evanston IL, and Washington DC. What has changed, though, is where you used to get a basket of whole spears, now the pickle "chip" is ubiquitous. MAKE FRIED PICKLES SPEARS AGAIN

Thanks for the intel! A roadie knows. Fixing above!

I beg to disagree, Doug! Fried slices of dill pickles are my favorite; spears are simply too much pickle matter per batter. Each to his/her own!

Team Spears all the way. Easier to hold. Sliced pickles are for burgers!

There will be books written - hell, there likeky have been- on Wal Mart's presence & impact in the US. There are facebook groups (people of Wal Mart); a nationwide fleet of Wal Mart 18 wheel delivery trucks, a massive list of privately owned shoppes forced out of opterations and much more. A shopping trip to Wal Mart - make sure its a Super Center - is a uniquely American experience. I loathe it and I love it.

Now, deep fried pickles. Only ever had this delicacy once, at a Bar in San Antonio. It was good, but I still prefer a chilled crunchy kosher dill. Would that we could buy them in New Zealand.

The Walmart greeter nodded to us from his mobility scooter. We nodded back. Agreed, it's such a weird experience but I'd never miss it, either.

NZ's fear of sour things mystifies me. We just got dills in the Greytown Fresh Choice but they're not very dilly. Would bring some back if they weren't so heavy!

Dan! How have we never talked about this!? It's the first things that hits me on returns to the US: the new flavors of flavortown! Last time I caught KitKat cereal, Cheetos Mac n Cheese, S'Mores Goldfish (Goldfish are the best - go Wilder!), TacoBell TacoSupreme sunflower seeds. That was just breakfast. You're right - everything can be read into these foodertainments. It's the Age of Mechanical Indigestion! You're writing the White Noise sequel here! Please send all food photos to me.

WHITE NOISE! Thanks, hermano. Poor sunflower seeds, we ask them to carry so much. Food photos coming!

Have you seen The Architecture of Doom? It's an oldie but a goodie (by which I mean utterly chilling, but I've been thinking about it for years...). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_KmZsA5Pfs

Hi Dylan! Thanks for this! I haven't seen this, but I will definitely check it out. Doom's a-coming. We'll need all the help we can get.

You are missed in workshop, sir. Love to NZ!

1. at Billy's bar-b-q in Lexington KY, they were offered as "dillickles"

2. my son, 8, asked me to stop packing goldfish in his lunch this year because "they're more for little kids and babies." He said that extra cheese or flavor blasted were okay, though.

Love this!! Ah, the kids groew up fast & put away childish things...The flavor blasted fish as the big boy variety does kinda fit here? Fascism does enjoy the performance of rugged & idealized masculinity...the world is so weird. Thanks for reading!

Genius. Love how your brain analyzes, compares, and deduces from fried pickles to flags and crosses.

If anything, I’d say fried pickles are becoming more common. I see them all the time on menus in New England.

You can even get frozen ones in the store. Farm Rich, the company that does mozzarella sticks, makes them. They’re pretty bad, but they’ve definitely reached a high level of market penetration.

I hope y’all are enjoying your stateside summer!

I will look for them at Walmart!! Why didn't I think of that?
